From Loss to Love: Gloriana Chung’s Story of Faith, Healing, and Grace
In this moving episode of Won’t God Do It?, Dr. Anita Turner welcomes long-time friend and educator Gloriana Chung. With nearly 30 years in LAUSD and decades of quiet spiritual service, Gloriana opens up about life’s hardest moments—divorce, caregiving, grief—and the grace of God that carried her through it all.
A Dark Night of the Soul and a Hand to Hold
After her divorce, Gloriana entered what she called a "dark night of the soul." She felt God’s absence—prayers unanswered, church unfulfilling, and hope distant. But grace showed up in community: three women from her church group became her lifeline, praying, crying, and walking with her until healing came. “They were God's hands and arms,” she recalls.
Caring for Parents, Healing the Past
Gloriana's testimony deepens as she shares the season of caring for her aging parents—both terminally ill and living in her home. Teaching full-time by day and caregiving by night, she reached a breaking point. But God’s word sustained her: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Through that journey, she reconciled with her mother, saying “I love you” for the first time—ushering in long-awaited healing and forgiveness.
Grace at Work: Mentoring with Patience
Now retired, Gloriana serves as a coach for new and struggling teachers. While rewarding, it’s also difficult—especially when teachers resist change. But Gloriana approaches them with the same compassion she offers everyone: prayerful patience, daily self-reflection, and grace. “God gives me grace, so I ask Him every day to help me give it to others.”
Faith That Shows
Beyond her titles—teacher, elder, mentor—Gloriana believes her most powerful witness is simply how she lives. Whether with a challenging friend or a resistant colleague, she strives to extend love, listen with empathy, and pursue peace. “Some people may never go to church,” she says. “But they know you.” It’s a beautiful reminder that we are often someone’s only glimpse of the gospel.
