When Dr. Manuel was asked to reapply for her superintendent role and was initially overlooked, she obeyed a Spirit‑led call to “be still.” In one overnight session she wrote the Student Empowerment Unit—a full program that included youth conferences, a TV show, and a student board member initiative. Presented to the superintendent, the program was approved and ran for more than a decade. Her story is a powerful example of how career disruption can lead to inspired leadership and lasting educational impact.
Serving Community: Wellness, Youth Conferences & Global Initiatives
Retirement became consulting and ministry: Dr. Manuel now organizes mental health and wellness events serving hundreds of families with food, health checks, books, and essentials; she produces middle- and high‑school conferences that empower young men and women. As co‑chair of the Realizing the Dream project with Martin Luther King III, she’s mobilizing community service, met the King family, attended a board retreat in Ecuador, and is expanding student leadership work into Englewood and international outreach like Kenya. She also serves on committees for Brown v. Board of Education commemorations and community events at the Getty House.
